Warts
Warts are benign skin growths caused by HPV infection of the epidermis. They are extremely common, especially in children and young adults.
Symptoms
Firm, rough papules on hands and fingers (common warts). Plantar warts on soles can be painful. Flat warts are small and numerous on the face or legs.
Causes and risk
HPV infects through minor skin breaks. Spread through contact or contaminated surfaces. Children and immunosuppressed individuals are at higher risk.
How it is evaluated
Clinical diagnosis. We look for thrombosed capillaries and loss of skin lines to distinguish from calluses. Biopsy for atypical lesions.
Treatment
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen is common. Topical salicylic acid is equally effective for many patients. Our Chicago team recommends combination approaches for stubborn warts.
