Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition causing intense itching and dry, red patches. It often begins in childhood but can persist or start in adulthood.
Symptoms
Intensely itchy, dry, red patches on inner elbows, behind knees, face, and neck. Skin may crack, weep, or thicken with chronic scratching. Flares alternate with remission.
Causes and risk
Genetic barrier defects (filaggrin mutations), immune dysregulation, and triggers like dry air, irritants, and allergens. Family history of eczema, asthma, or hay fever increases risk.
How it is evaluated
Diagnosis is clinical. Patch testing may be added if allergic contact dermatitis is suspected as a co-trigger. We assess severity to guide treatment intensity.
Treatment
Daily fragrance-free moisturization restores the skin barrier. Topical corticosteroids control flares. Moderate-to-severe cases may benefit from dupilumab or JAK inhibitors. Our Chicago providers build step-up and step-down plans.
